Smiling as I watched Nick sleep, I traced the defined lines of his jaw and cheeks with sparklers burning in my fingertips. He was so handsome, so peaceful, and a sigh floated up from my depths to rustle his thick lashes. Instantly his eyelids popped open, and he shot into a sitting position to stare at me with wide eyes and parted lips.

“Hannah- holy shit… are you okay?” Warm, hard palms cupped my cheeks, and Nick pulled me roughly into his lap. A small giggle escaped my mouth, but it was enough to make him pause as he stared down at me with an intensity that bordered on a glare. “Why are you laughing?”

“I think you’re cute when you’re concerned.” Blurting out my answer before I’d even registered the thought, my smile widened at the surprise that shone on Nick’s face. “Why are you surprised? Do you not want to be cute?”

“… Hannah, sweetheart… you accidentally ingested some hard drugs, and they’re still affecting you. Do you not remember anything?” My grin dimmed at the question, and Nick released my cheeks to frown. “You need to go to the hospital, sweetheart.”

“No!” Twisting in his lap, I wrapped my arms around his neck to hold tight. Nick’s smell filled my nostrils like the nicest perfume, and against my breasts his chest was hard and firm. His heart beat in sync with mine, and I closed my eyes to sigh in bliss. “I don’t want to. I want to stay here… like this. I remember. I remember. The brownie, and kissing you… and James- and this morning… I remember it.”

“… Why aren’t you disgusted with me? Hate me?” Nick’s stiff form relaxed under my chin, and goosebumps washed my chest and arms at his questions. Pulling back, my smile disappeared completely at the seriousness on his face.

“Why would I be? You didn’t know. It’s not your fault… You thought-“

“That’s not what I mean, and you know it, Hannah.” Clamping my mouth shut at the irritated snap, I took a shallow breath through my nose while Nick shuddered against me. “Why don’t you hate me for taking advantage of you?”

“Nick…” Self-depreciation leaked into his voice, and I sighed softly before leaning back onto my heels. It was written all over his face- he hated himself enough for the both of us. My heart soared at his expression, and he clenched his fists in his lap before I spoke up. “Do you know what it’s like to be happy all the time? To never acknowledge problems? It’s hard, Nick- it’s hard, and in the end, no one cares about why you’re happy constantly. Last night… last night… I felt so much nothingness even though I was aware. I felt like I felt when my dad first kicked me out not for dancing, but for going to college. There just wasn’t anything in my heart, and it… was strangely uplifting.”

Nick’s eyes widened, and I reached for his wrist to lift his palm to my chest. I knew what he felt- my heartbeat was strong and calm.
